Where to Stay in and Around Gümüşlük
Harbour, hill or quiet coast? How to choose an area around Gümüşlük, what kinds of places exist, when to book and how longer stays work.
Gümüşlük is small, but where you sleep shapes your days more than you might expect. A room near the harbour means walking to dinner and waking to the sound of boats; a house on the hill means views and quiet, and a short drive for almost everything. Here is how we would think it through.
Gümüşlük harbour and the village
The old centre around the harbour is what most people picture: fish restaurants along the water, the shallow causeway out to Rabbit Island, the beach curving away to the north. Staying here, you can go days without a car. Drivers leave their cars in the pay car park just inland and walk in, which keeps the waterfront calm.
The trade-off is that in July and August the evenings are busy and music can carry across the bay. Rooms close to the water are limited and go early. If your idea of a holiday is a slow day that starts and ends on foot, this is the place to look first.
Karakaya, on the hill
Karakaya is the old stone village on the hillside above Gümüşlük, reached by a winding road. Summer nights are a little cooler, it is quieter, and the views over the bay and out to the islands are wide. You will want a car, a scooter or strong legs: walking back up after dinner is a proper climb. We have written more about Karakaya and its stone houses.
Koyunbaba and the coast to the north
Koyunbaba is the more spread-out area of villas and small developments along the coast and hills north of the harbour. It faces open sea, so the sunsets are long, and there is very little going on at night. When the northerly wind blows, this side feels it first. It suits people who want space and do not mind driving into the village for dinner.
Neighbouring villages
Yalıkavak, to the north-east, has a large marina, more shops and smarter restaurants, and prices to match. Turgutreis, to the south, is a proper town with supermarkets, year-round services and a big weekly market; less romantic, but practical for long stays and winter. Smaller places in between, such as Kadıkalesi, have their own beaches looking out to the islands. If you are still weighing up the whole peninsula, our guide to choosing your base compares the main options.
Types of places to stay
Around Gümüşlük you will find small family-run hotels and guesthouses (pansiyon), boutique places with a handful of rooms, self-catering apartments and stone houses, and villas with pools on the hillsides. The big all-inclusive resorts are mostly elsewhere on the peninsula.
When you compare, look past the photographs. Ask about steps and slopes (many houses here are built into the hill), parking, whether the sea is a walk or a drive away, and what the place is like when the wind picks up.
When to book
July, August and the religious holidays are the busy periods. Book months ahead, and expect minimum stays and higher prices. Holiday dates move every year; our events page lists the next ones.
May, June, September and October are easier and better value, and the sea stays warm well into October. From November to April many places close. Those that stay open can be very peaceful, but check heating before you book.
Good to know: Houses built for summer can feel cold and damp in January. Ask directly how a place is heated and whether it is insulated.
Longer stays
For a month or more, the off-season is when it makes sense: monthly rates are often far lower than summer weekly rates, and some owners prefer one long-staying guest to many short ones. In summer, long stays are expensive and hard to find. Before you commit, ask about internet speed, heating and what is open nearby in winter. For realistic budgets, see what a month in Gümüşlük costs.
